In June 2020 and the middle of a pandemic, the FDA alerted consumers about a voluntary recall of hand sanitizer that potentially contained methanol (wood alcohol), which could be toxic when absorbed into the skin or ingested. Methanol poisoning can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, or death.
